Álvarez

Álvarez belongs to the medieval patronymic tradition: it developed from the personal name Álvaro. Such names could arise independently in different households before becoming hereditary. Their linguistic history is shared; their family histories must be traced separately.

The Real Academia Galega’s name guide traces Álvarez to Álvaro, a Germanic personal name found in Galician documents from the ninth century. The given name circulated long after the early medieval kingdoms ended; its surname belongs to that later naming tradition.
